Grace W. Mershon
Grace W. Mershon died June 26, 2006 at the Orchard Nursing Home in Granville, at the age of 91. She previously resided with her daughters, Ethyl Jean Sheehy of Whitehall and Mary Rose Hapeman of Edinboro, Pa.
She was born on Sept. 28, 1914 to Francis Whitmarsh and Rose O’Grady Whitmarsh at their summer home in Burlington, Vt. She grew up Boston, Mass., and attended Boston University where she majored in journalism and culinary arts.
Her extensive career included sports reporter for the Rutland Herald, publicity director for the Daytona Beach Speedway, chef for the Windsor Hotel in Elizabethtown, the Casino at Huletts Landing and the New Arlington Hotel in Whitehall.
During her early retirement years, she enjoyed Western square dancing with the Apple Jacks and Jills of Fair Haven, Vt.; however, she will be best remembered for the intricately patterned sweaters and baby sets she knitted for family members and friends.
She was a communicant of Our Lady of Angels Church in Whitehall and Our Lady of the Lake Church in Edinboro. She was active for many years in the Cursillo Movement of the Roman Catholic Diocese of Albany.
She was predeceased by her husband, William Livingston Mershon, who died in 1971, plus a sister, Ethyl Ladabouche of Pittsford, Vt., and two
brothers, Francis (Dinny) Whitmarsh of Maine and Norbert Witmarsh of California.
Survivors include three daughters, Mary Rose and her husband, Martin Hapeman, of Edinboro, Pa., who have 10 children; Ethyl Jean and her husband, John Sheehy of Whitehall, who have four children and Marjory Grace and her husband, Bill Foster of Daytona Beach, Fla., who have one daughter; 30 great grandchildren and several nieces, and nephews. Local grandchildren include Bernadette and Philip Perrone of Clemons, John and Melissa Sheehy of Queensbury, Edward and Cherie Sheehy of Whitehall and Jeannie and Timothy Ingleston of Clemons.
A Funeral Mass was celebrated on Saturday, July 1, at 10 a.m. at Our Lady of Hope Roman Catholic Church with Father David LeFort, pastor, officiating.
The Rite of Committal followed at Our Lady of Angels Cemetery in Whitehall.
Family and friends called at the Jillson Funeral Home, Inc., 46 Williams St., Whitehall, NY on Friday, June 30 from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m. and 6 p.m. to 8 p.m.
The family suggests that memorial donations be made to either the memorial fund of Our Lady of Hope Church or the activities fund of the Orchard Nursing Home, Route 40, Granville, NY 12832.
Thanks are extended to Bernadette Perrone (granddaughter) and Jone Johnson (friend and caregiver) whose teamwork managed Grace’s care and support for the past several years and to the employees and residents at the Orchard Nursing Home for making Grace’s two years there fun-filled and rewarding.
