music man

Blogger in hiding, it’s safe to come ow-wow-out

I got the chance to interview

Todd Michaelsen

recently. A Granville grad from 1998 ( I think) he now lives in Brooklyn and pays the bills with rock and roll – you can’t beat that.

It was one of those fun interviews that often veered into the territory of just two guys sitting and talking music.

To paraphrase Steeley Dan “I really enjoyed myself when I reported this article; sue me if I write too long.”

Not just an engaging person with something cool and intriguing, musically and otherwise, to say but a guy a music fan, like me, seemed to instantly connect with -  not in a creepy kind of stalker way (yet…tee-hee) but in a ‘hey this guy is tuned to my mental radio station’ kind of way.

Michaelsen said he’s written more than 100 songs and I can see why, music just kind of flows out of him as evidenced when I asked to take his picture for the article.

As soon as the guitar was in hand he was playing something that he continued to strum away on during the tiny photo session.

The band -

My Pet Dragon

(get your t-shirt now so you can reserve space on the ‘I knew them when’ bandwagon) is perched on the edge of something.

Discovery?

One can hope as much for the artist’s sake as that of the people who will love this guy’s stuff.

Why perched, you say?

Simple, the songs are intoxicating and catchy.

‘Lover in Hiding’

is not an earworm kind of song, but it will stay with you long after you’ve shut off the car and gone inside.

I define an earworm as an unwelcome intruder in your gray matter versus something you welcome in and work to remember.

I do a lot of listening on the road and love to leave a new piece of music in the CD player until I know it back to front and can sing along and the Maxi-single Michaelsen gave me has me looking for a source for the band’s first outing ‘First Born’ and looking forward to the release of ‘Mountains and Cities.’

This one and everything else on the single for that matter doesn’t break down on repeated listening. Michaelsen’s music, what I’ve heard so far, stands the test of time after time listening. When ‘Lover’ pops back into your head it is certainly welcome there just like a visit from a oh, i don't know - Lover in Hiding?

Go and check them out - just do it.

rock around, and on, the clock

Stayed tuned to your Sentinel for an update on the Veterans Memorial Clock. John Freed has been hard at work on this thing despite his ailing back.

I'll be putting out an article for the next Sentinel on the ongoing effort. I also understand that TV news has been paying some attention to the story.

Big thing frm John, he wants to clarify: This is not a repair job this is a RESTORATION. Perhaps it is time to repeat the laundry list of tasks he has planned before the clock goes back on its post.

some baseball

Just some debris kicking around the notebook...

Nice moment: Hoagland’s younger brother climbed the fence at Saint Rose

S Bob Bellizzi Field to go and get his brother’s homerun ball back – and faced a none-to-happy neighbor for his efforts.

Funny moment: Coach John Stewart busted the Bluehawks’ first base coach looking into the dugout and trying to read his lips and signaling his bench by making the motion of pulling up his pants. “Go on, pull up your pants, tell him – here comes the fastball,” Stewart said repeatedly. Although the coach’s pants suddenly seemed to fit better and need less adjustment he continued to attempt to get a glimpse of the inner workings of the Golden Horde.

Home field advantage: Granville is 30-3 at home over the time since the opening of the Ken Burch Complex, falling to Greenwich this season; Ravena last season and in Saratoga Catholic in the first season of play at the Ken Burch Complex.

Connor Hoagland: 2-3, double, HR, 2 runs scored, 3 RBI

Jayson Osborne: 2-4, 1 run, triple, 1 RBI scored winning run

John Stewart: 2-3

Cori Winch: 1-3 Triple, RBI

Kyle Rathbun: 1-4, Double, RBI

Michael Resetar: Winning pitcher: Complete game, 7 strikeouts, 2 walks

Run ‘em out. Coachs stress running out each play, foul balls and dropped third strikes out for a reason as Kyle Rathbun proved Thursday. When Cairo-Durham catcher Chris Hernandez dropped the called third strike on sophomore outfielder Rathbun he nearly walked to the dugout. That is until the whole Horde bench screamed ‘Run!’ Rathbun took off for first, not at a trot, but at a sprint. Hernandez, meanwhile, took a shuffling step after picking up the ball and loaded up to fire a bullet down the first base line like a quarterback loading up for the 100-yard Hail Mary. Unfortunately for the Mustangs that bullet missed the target and flew down the line like a hit pitch all the way to the fence. By the time Cairo-Durham had the ball back in play the speedy outfielder was standing at third base. Struck out, but still in scoring position.
