crash

A real mess out there this morning and the weather with high winds, rain and cold seems to be generating some traffic accidents.

Just got back from a Route 4 fatal crash - a tractor trailer from New Jersey went off the east side of the road while traveling northbound. The single occupant of the truck was killed, police confirmed. Police said witnesses reported the driver trying to correct from some kind of skid leading up to the crash. But no cause was expected to be known for some time. No other vehicles were involved in the crash.

The scene, approaching but south of the village of Whitehall, has Route 4 closed down it has been that way for a few hours now.

The scene is about five miles from the Route 4 Route 22 intersection.

I would not expect the road to open very soon because when I left the scene the truck had not been pulled out of the ditch yet.

Four wreckers - yes four - were working on pulling the container truck back up onto the road surface and they were struggling to do it.

The large purple tractor trailer had a shipping container on the back like those that come off of ocean-going container ships.

No report yet on the identification of the driver pending next of kin and no accident team working at the scene at that time.

Unsubstantiated reports say the driver took the ditch over crossing into oncoming traffic.

border fire

Early reports

are coming in regarding a fire near the border in North Granville. The fire broke out around 6 p.m. in a trailer park across from Vittengl (spelling?) Ford in the Comstock/ Fort Ann area just up Route 22 from the North Granville border.

Fire companies from North, Middle Granville and Fort Ann and possibly others responded to the fire. No word yet of any injuries. The mobile home was believed destroyed.

Fire fighters have told me mobile homes are notorious for burning quickly and completely in the absence of a quick response.

quick one

Who knew? Latest word is that Matt Rathbun changed his mind about taking the interim supervisor’s position. After giving every indication he planned to accept the job, Rathbun said today he will not be named tonight at the special 7 p.m. board meeting.

Haven’t heard yet if this changes anything at the county level –as in will someone go. More on that later, but I would think so.

Benches.

Lots of postings on the locations of benches along the walking route – too many to post – NOT REALLY. I haven’t thought to make the loop and write them down, but there area many more than there were in the fall.

Fishing season is creeping up 14 days as of today. Despite the Thursday debut of the 2010 fishing season I hope to see plenty of fishermen/women out there.

Speaking of, e-mail or bring in pictures (e-mail probably works best because you can’t send pix to this blog) of your opening day catch. Who knows? It might get in the Sentinel. If you do be sure to include where, in general terms of course I know how anglers are about ‘secret’ spots, who you fished with, lure/bait. Just tell a little about how you did that day. Send them to sentinelreporter@manchesternewspapers.com.

Bloging away to both of the people who have ever replied (thanks)

Matt

blawg

SUNSHINE – AAAAAAAHHHHH.

If you only have a moment or two use it to get outside today and enjoy some of this sunshine. Just walking across the parking lot to get something out of the car is a cathartic exercise.

Spring is finally here and it seems like it’s for good. I for one can’t wait. I’m feeling a little burned by old man winter after the only time my snowshoes saw snow was when some blew into the car when I was cleaning it off to drive to work.

What else?

I’ve noticed the ‘Loopers’ are out walking again.

Nice to see.

It always reminds me of Granville waking up from that long winter’s nap when people get out and start walking.

Remember, those new benches donated by

Telescope Casual Furniture

are now set out at intervals around the loop – very nice of those folks to do that.

Benches can be found:

near the sign for the

Ken Burch Complex

in front of the Pember Library

…and there are several others I can’t think of – come on blog fans post some replies and let everyone know where they are.

a blog by any other name

I’d like to take the time and mention by name the second person ever to respond to this blog: Pat Wesner.

Pat posted some kind comments about the passing of Rodger Hurley. Welcome to the forum here, tell a friend. Tell a lot of them – it’s lonely in here. LOL.

There really is no time limit for such comments and I welcome any other legitimate comments; it seems the only thing that draws more SPAM than an e-mail account in a blog post.

In between sports this week and looking forward to getting the previews out. My vague sense of things are competitive teams on the diamond, despite graduation losses. Tennis has put up good teams and this year should be no different, although who knows where the varsity players come from with no modified program; a difficult thing to create in a cash-strapped time such as this, no doubt.

Track could be the dark horse team this spring. Coming off of an indoor season competing against many bigger schools with success I have to think they’ll fare well in the Wasaren track scramble.

Sad News

Sad news hit the Granville community just hours after the Sentinel went to press Tuesday morning with word Supervisor Rodger Hurley died.

At 70, Hurley was vital and energetic so that makes his death from a heart attack that much more shocking.

“Just months into his second term after winning a nail-biter election that came down to counting absentee ballots, Hurley called 911 about 8:30 a.m. complaining of chest pains. Hurley was taken by ambulance to Glens Falls Hospital by Granville EMS, but died en route, officials said.”

Looking back I’m not sure exactly how far he walked for instance on the town wide clean up day with the FFA in 2009, but I took his picture with Paul Klam out near Honey Hill.

Very hard to believe, shocking and sad.

I don't get the sense that many people read this thing, but if you're out there and would like to post some thoughts, please feel free. Stay on point and keep it clean and you should see your thoughts on Rodger Hurley posted here soon after typing them in.
