out

Karl Palmer fell 4-3 in the much anticipated rematch with Wlash from Watervliet. Palmer took several blows to the nose and spent a lot of time that could have been wrestling as blood time. 'We're just wrestling here' is what the Watervliet coach said, but he might as well have been coaching the bad guy from the Karate Kid. The headbutts were not missed by the crowd, they ooooh'ed each time that happened.

So long story short, gotta get going to make the tip off in Granville, Palmer will not be a state champion THIS YEAR.

Now, we're wrestling

It's bigger, faster and meaner. It's the end of the line one way or another - it's the New York State Wrestling Championship.

Karl Palmer is through to the next round after wrecking his first round opponent 15-0. Coach / dad Steve Palmer said he did not expect his 140-pounder to tech fall his guy in the first round, but he also said that with a smile.

A dominant performance by Palmer. Fast, fluid and merciless. Peter Ferrante of New Paltz spent most of the match on his back, as the score shows, the match ended at 3:45.

The body are flying and now, so will the burgers - it's lunch time.

The opening win sets up the match many have been waiting for, the rematch of Palmer and Brian Walsh from Watervliet. For those of you who don't know Palmer beat him for the section title 3-2 in a match that was not as close as the score would seem to indicate. Karl controlled that match to exact revenge for a 4-2 loss in a close match the previous year for the section title.

Palmer will wrestle again about 2:30-ish.

This should be a heck of a match and I'll have the results posted as soon as possible. I'm splitting time with Keith the Lobster Lobdell on his PC at the media tables matside so I might have to wait to get some results posted. After all, Keith has five guys here.

I'll also work on picking up some of the other results from the rest of the Section II team. At a glance, we're doing pretty good although the sixth seed at 135 pounds Tyler Nicholson lost a tough one by one 6-5. His opponenet, a tough cookie from Saranac Ryan Guynup could have been hit with a stall late as he spent the last minute of the match watching the clock and countering. BUT he hadn't been warned, so...that's the way it goes.

Times Union is PACKED. Parking is what it always is, incredibly hard to find but you can't beat the atmosphere of ANY wrestling tourney.

All right, update hunting...

Sam Chase from Mechanicville continues to live dangerously, he' sucrrently in OT up by one, 4-3. Gave up a stall to put the match into OT. That's how it ends, once again, narrowly.

They're going to use all of the mats to finish off Div. 1 to keep the tourney going on time. Still doesn't look too bad for the next round of wrestling. The second round will finish before the wrestlebacks start. Good way to go.

WHITE OUT

This of course applies to when they finally meet.

Attention Granville basketball fans:

The team and coaches would like to invite those attending the game to help create a 'White Out' by wearing white while you root on the Golden Horde against #9 seeded Cobleskill this Tuesday, Feb. 23. Find a white sweater, shirt or something and help show your support for the hometown team.

B-Ball

Basketball intelligence

Just a few thoughts as news of both Granville hoops team’s post season fate hits the newsroom, well news side of the divider anyway.

Here goes,

Congratulations to both teams on getting to host a sectional game this season. It’s the second time in a row for the boys and a first (EVER?) for the girls. Also a career high in league wins for head coach Lance Jordan with four.

Also a hearty great job to the girls team for knocking off

(now seventh seed in the Class B)

Hudson Falls last night. The team showed grit, balanced scoring and poise in the win.

Proof positive that free throws count.

Few missed opportunities, although a few more scores in the third and the Horde really walk away with this one. In a word: awesome.

For their efforts this season both Granville teams will be rewarded. The girls get an 0-18 team and the boys a .500 group, both have a chance to advance.

Both Horde teams will face

Bulldogs

in the first round of play – from the same school - the Cobleskill Bulldogs will be coming to Granville Feb. 20 for the girls and Feb. 23 for the boys.

Should they advance both teams Granville teams will also face Fonda-Fultonville in the next round. This is not so lucky as both

Braves

teams are highly ranked and dangerous.

It remains to be seen if the time off is good for the boys team to maybe smooth out some of the rough edges of late.

Good news for the girls who are riding a hot hand coming off two convincing wins with the second in a row the upset of the Tigers. BIG last game win Granville can’t stress that one enough.

Girls will HOST the Bulldogs Feb. 20 at 6 p.m.

If they move on they’ll face the second seeded Fonda (Lady?) Braves in Fonda Feb. 24 at 2 p.m.

The remainder of the playoffs will proceed as follows in the girls B bracket:

Quarterfinals at higher seed site Sat. Feb. 27

Semifinals at Scotia 6 p.m. and 7:30 p.m. March 3

Final HVCC noon March 6

Boys (8 seed) will also HOST the Bulldogs (9 seed). They tip at 7 p.m. Feb. 23 with the winner facing (undefeated in the league, one loss overall # 1 seed) Fonda-Fultonville at HVCC 8:30 p.m. Feb. 26 in the quarterfinals

The remainder of the playoffs will proceed as follows in the boys B bracket:

Semifinal – March 2, 6:30 and 8 p.m. Civic Center

Finals – March 7, 4:30 p.m. Civic Center

wrestling results

An outstanding year for all, although I imagine dissappointing, no one wants to lose. Looking at it glass-half-full - only Walter Foster will not get the chance to try again. Foster had a great sports year when you think about it between football and wrestling - the stuff many dream of and never reach.

A great job to all of the guys who gutted it out at the state runoffs.

Civic Center results

Here’s a breakdown of thewrestlers (I do not have all scores, but what I do I will put here):

Quarters Pinned by Aaron Dudley of Hudson Falls at 3:43
1st Wback Lost to Jordan Robichaud of HOOF
Tourney Rec. 1-2
Season Rec. 28-18 Another injury-shortened tourney. If I recall correctly Kurt already beat the Robichaud kid pretty handily earlier in the season - 9-1?

215 - Eric Hastings

Round 1 Bye
Quarters Defeated Adam Wayne Therrian of GREEN 4-1
Semis Lost to Duanesburg’s Nick Gwiazdowski 9-0
Cons. Semis Defeated Justin Benjamin of Corinth 9-0
Cons. Finals Lost to Adam Wayne Therrian of GREEN 2-1Place 4th
Tourney Rec. 2-2
Season Rec. 41-5 Bad luck on this seed. the kid from Duanesburg looks like he's for real so any seed but fourth probably puts Eric in the final. Whitehall's Gebo surely was not up to the task; a tough break for a wrestler who dominated this season.

285 - Walter Foster

Round 1 Defeated Bill EngleHardt of CAM by pin

1st Wback Defeated Jesse Montasano of BK
2nd Wback Pinned by Jim Dykeman of Duanesburg

injury stops Foster from getting his rematch with Sam Chase. I'm not the only one that was looking forward to that rematch after Chase got lucky in the C's and in the sectionals. Somehow this wrestler is 'stall-proof'

SPAMSPAMSPAMSPAMSPAMSPAMSPAM wonderful spam

Wow

I can't believe how much SPAM this thing receives each day. Ardyce, does you blog get hit like this? By the way find her running dialog at the Pember Library site.

What else,

Happy B-Day to the Scouts....

ummm

I do like the unlifelike pink canned meat product, just not its e-mail cousin

Still no legit posters on this thing. Anyone out there checking out the website from far off? Like Essex County?!

Rambling and not the good kind like in a country song

What’s new?

I’m hearing from Haynes house of Hope founders committee member Lila Myer that the ticket for the HHoH Sweetheart dinner dance are moving pretty well with 100 couple already reserving tickets.

The more the merrier as the Forum holds about twice that.

They’re printing more if you’re thinking about it. It sounds like fun and there’s plenty of room for more people. The best thing about it, the money raised goes to support the Haynes House.

Speaking of… their first resident is transitioning smoothly. And HH personel report being excited and all other sorts of emotions at getting a chacne to do what it is the HHoH is there to do.

An occupied house also needs donations to continue to operate. Food and volunteers are the big two, but I’m sure they’d appreciate cash as well.

Granville did well at the C’s this weekend coming in second to a top-to-bottom strong Corinth team. Walter Foster got caught wrestling and had to settle for a second place at 285 against a Mechanicville wrestler.

He had the guy beat but got hit with a stalling call. If anything they could have gone both ways but it looked like a typical 285 bout to me. Pressing at the end of the match, it was tied headed to overtime, Foster ended up on the bottom when going on the offensive with seconds left. Things move pretty quickly on the mat so it’s easy to second guess those split second judgment calls – I wonder if refs watch tape to try to get better?

The Refs got an earful from the coaches and the crowd in a few matches during the Cs and had many complaining, but when the stakes are that high it would be weird if everyone was happy.

Stalling is always a subject of debate at the tournaments and certain teams are notorious for it, like they have a part of practice about how to stall and get away with it. It seems to be one of those things that 'other' team is always guilty of.

Stalling, or the lack of, figured into the match of Sarah Anderson from Schuylerville who somehow managed to avoid a stalling call and eked out the tightest of matches against a Corinth wrestler. There were actual boos at the end of the match with some of the fans thinking Anderson had not done enough wrestling to win the tight 3-2 bout.

She was apparently injured during the first period and managed to hold off her opponent for the rest of the match.

Impressive or passive?

That’s the call the guys in black and white have to make in a split second, not easy at all.

Lots of chatter afterwards with people wondering if the 32-0 senior got a pass to reach 33-0 – or was it sours grapes from the visiting Corinth fans who expected to see their guy, a talented wrestler in his own right, knock of the state finalist.

That’s actually one of the great things about wrestling.

No two people will view a bout the same way and every evaluation is heavily subjective. It’s hard for people to be objective is a sport that evokes so much passion.

A wrestler from Maple Hill who was taken from the tournament on a stretcher should be ok. I understand he was taken to Glens Falls Hospital as a precaution because it was a neck injury.
