blog-lo-dite

let the games begin, or at least the practices...

Looking back on my long gone high school days it seems one of those things that took the sting out of heading back to school after a summer off was sports. Two-a-days always seemed to get my head on a little straighter than it had been all summer; it was always nice to have to go somewhere where there was a goal in mind other than getting through another day at (insert the name of the terrible summer job here).

Looking to the varsity teams for the fall, and the one word to sum it all up is: change.

Field hockey graduated a big bunch of talented quick players, tough defenders and one of the league’s best between the pipes. Other teams that fell to the Horde last season are a little bit older and more savvy this season – a tough task for them, but one which will show off what has been going on at the mod and jv levels while the recent grads wowed us all.

By the by. If anyone out there is or will be tracking their favorite Horde field hockey players and they want to send something along, we’ll make an effort to get it into the paper. This is something that would have to be driven by parents, the players or siblings. Just a thought as the varsity lineup keeps me hoppin’.

Prediction: too early to say.

Soccer. Girls. A change in coaching for the girls as assistant Carol Scott takes over for longtime, since the program started, coach Carrie Arquette who moved up to coach in the mom league. Loss of grads combined with returning talent makes this one a hard call to make. Supporting cast and alternate goal tenders make a big difference here.

Prediction: too early to say.

Almost forgot. there is an exchange student coming in, she's from somewhere in Europe, can't recall where. Being an American, I assume she plays soccer. An X-factor?

Soccer. Boys. Same tune in a different key. Lance Jordan returns as coach but this team suffered heavy grad losses as I recall. Results depend upon what the underclassmen and jv players bring to the table. Year six from the boys program? I think.

Prediction. You guessed it (all one of you reading) too early to say.

More to come.....

Summer...is that you?

In between the torrential downpours signs of summer can be seen around Granville

the upcoming weather forcast for the weekend looks good, so here's hoping - raise up those coffee cups people - that the rest of the summer and the indian summer we are certainly owed comes off with a lot less wet weather than we've been getting

Come on Sunshine

I'm sure there are some major home projects out there suffering from

'lackus sunshineus'

need to get up on the roof? I know I do. How are those landscaping projects going? On hold. Hmmm, sounds like a question of the week.

It was a wet ride out to Binghamton for me to attend Spiedie Fest, a balloon festival where one of my favorites, the Marshall Tucker Band, was playing. They were, no suprise, awesome, - nothing quite like thousands of people in full throat singing 'Can't You See?'

A friend said he didn't want to go beacuse the band didn't have all of the original member and wouldn't sound as good - couldn't be more wrong, actually on both accounts. Out of six guys on stage, four were original members

Got a little look at the city itself and liked what I saw, I'd go back especially if the guys come back. It was a lot of fun take a reasonable, three hour, car trip, get a hotel room and go see a show. I took a Sentinel but the band stayed at the hotel until just a few minutes before they hit the stage - no shot of the band and yours truly with the paper.

The crush of autogrpah-seekers afterwards ruled out any chance after the show either.

Weather, always a factor this summer, had the park where the festival was held muddy, muddy, muddy. A really loose, squishy mud, about the consistency of shampoo coated the traffic areas. The crew put down hay, but with a few thousand people walking over it, the walkways were quickly sloppy and slippery.

Sandals - not the choice of footwear. When the mud got onto the tops of your feet it would squish between your toes and shoot up your legs like gross little geysers. Yummy.

Not a lot better here. Heavy rains pounded the area bringing the Mettowee up to dangerous levels - NO playing out there right now.

Coming up on 48 hours since the worst of the recent downpours Sunday and the river is still choclate milk colored and running like spring.

Be sure to use caution out there if going near it.

Upcoming chicken.
